Weapons is a unique thriller that unfolds its story through character-centric chapters, each arc gradually leading into the main plot and climax. However, the deliberately slow-paced screenplay ends up feeling like the film’s true villain. I feel quite neutral about director Zach Cregger’s filmmaking here — on one hand, I want to appreciate his approach, but on the other, I can’t help but question the choice of such slow pacing. Sound design is great. Julia Garner, Josh, Austin, Wong, Alden, Cary and especially Amy Madigan, all deliver terrific performances that elevate the film. There are a couple of jump scares I truly didn’t see coming, and the surprise factor made them work really well. Just a note — the 2:17 time stamp shows kids being controlled while performing certain rituals, as presented in the film, it doesn’t actually signify anything.
