The Fantastic 4: First Steps
With The Fantastic Four, Marvel delivers its most solid film since last year’s Deadpool & Wolverine (Thunderbolts was serviceable, though arguably forgettable in comparison) It’s a fresh take—entertaining, a bit emotional, and oh boy, that brief but impactful cameo from the big bad Galactus. He’s the main villain, sure, but only shows up when the necessary. The casting is spot-on, and the retro-themed visuals are a treat. It’s great to see some of Hollywood’s finest take on fan-favorite roles—Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, Julia Garner, Ralph Ineson, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach all bring their A-game. Matt Shakman continues to prove he’s a reliable and promising director. With WandaVision and now this film under his belt, Marvel would do well to hand him a few more projects. The music by Giacchino? Fantastic. And with that crisp sound design, watching it in a good cinema makes all the difference.
