Superman
James Gunn’s Superman kickstarts the new DC universe with a lighthearted, colorful tone—but it veered off track early on, and might need course correction in the years to come. David Corenswet shines as Superman, and Lois Lane is equally solid—no complaints there. But the character-packed plot feels undercooked, and the story follows such a familiar superhero template, it rarely offers anything fresh. In my view, the film stumbles by making Superman’s human side the central plot rather than a layer within it. Sure, past films explored this angle too—but they did so while driving a stronger narrative. Here, it is the narrative, and that’s where it loses impact. No emotion at all and I’m surprised how James Gunn missed this (given how well he presented Rocket’s backstory in GOTG3). Lex Luthor—one of DC’s greatest villains, is reduced to a rather silly presence here.
