Heart of the Beast
Brad Pitt and German Shepherd Uber, under David Ayer’s direction, headline a slow-paced yet beautiful and engaging survival thriller that chooses heart over noise or needless excess. The first appreciation has to go to Mauro Fiore. The film is packed with breathtaking scenery and gorgeous visual compositions that make the surroundings feel like an important part of the journey itself. The water-drift sequence has some striking moments too, but portions where the waves are presented directly through the lens didn’t work for me. Instead of pulling me further into the situation, that particular visual treatment became slightly distracting. Jared Michael Fry, Laurent Kossayan and the sound team deserve equal mention. The score and sound mixing add tremendous weight without overpowering what is happening on screen, giving several stretches of the film the atmosphere they need.
